Breville BSG520XL Panini Duo 1500-Watt Panini Press Review

The Breville BSG520XL Panini Duo 1500-Watt Nonstick Panini Press is a solid, well built press that will do everything from grill paninis and sandwiches to cook pancakes and eggs, and can be tucked away nicely for fast and easy storage. Let’s take a closer look at some of its features.

The Breville Panini Duo measures 13 by 11-3/4 by 5-1/4 inches and comes in an elegant brushed stainless steel housing. It features a powerful 1500 watt element for fast heating, “power-on” and “ready-to-cook” indicator lights, heavy-duty die-cast arms, nonslip feet, a locking clip so that it may be stored upright, and a cord wrap in the base. A floating hinge allows you to set 4 height settings to accommodate various different food shapes and sizes. This convenient feature also allows you to lock the top so that heat radiates downwards to create wonderful open-faces melts

The Breville’s top and bottom plates come in a nonstick, scratch-resistant Quantanium surface. Because of the non stick surfaces, you can cook without oil or butter and enjoy healthier, low fat meals. The grill’s bottom plate comes in a flat design, which not only offers more thorough cooking, but also allows you to cook foods you otherwise couldn’t cook on a ribbed plate (such as eggs and pancakes). The top, on the other hand, does come ribbed, to create authentic restaurant-style grill marks on your food.

The panini press comes with a user manual, and a one-year limited warranty. The user manual also includes some delicious easy to follow recipes, such as herbed omelet panini, warm Caesar sandwiches, grilled chicken lavosh with mango and pinenut mayonnaise, as well as dessert items like sweet fig focaccia, toasted chocolate panini, crispy brioche with berries, and more.

Let’s do a quick recap of the positives and negatives that this panini press has to offer. These are all based on actual customer reviews.

“This press looks like many others, but its stainless steel construction is especially solid. The plates, even the corrugated top plate, are easy to clean with a wet paper towel. For those (like me) who would prefer no corrugation, the ribbing on the top plate is mercifully shallow. The machine heats up fast and cooks evenly. I’m very happy with it.”

“The Breville is by far the highest quality Panini press I have seen. Had the cuisinart, but sent it back because it was so flimsy–after a few uses the top grill plate wouldn’t release. The Breville lacks a temperature control, but that does not seem to be that important. It lacks removable grill plates, but cleans up so easily it doesn’t really matter. My wife doesn’t like to plug it in because there is always an arc–it should have an on-off switch so you can leave it plugged in the wall.”

Our Final Verdict

The Breville Panini Duo lacks some features that you can find on other similarly priced models, such as removable plates or a drip tray. However, it does a fantastic job at grilling your food quickly and evenly, it’s very well built, and stores easily. We saw very few negative comments from customers, which is rare. We would definitely recommend this model.
